The role of Pantothenic acid acne treatment

Pantothenic acid is Vitamin B5 and for some time has been used in acne treatment. The nutrient can be found in many food items and has no side effects even when taken in large amounts, unlike other acne treatments. Food products from which Vitamin B5 comes from are eggs, beef, soybeans, avocado, mushrooms, cashew nuts, whole grain, yeast, broccoli, and liver. It’s a water-soluble nutrient, and this is an advantage because it makes it highly absorbed in the body fast. Vitamin B5 regulates the level of Coenzyme A. When this enzyme is low in the body system, it results into a very poor breakdown of fats stored in sebaceous glands which in turn causes an increase in sebum secretion or oil that results in acne.

The body is unable to produce pantothenic acid by itself. Therefore, it has to get it from the food you consume. It’s a useful nutrient in acne treatment and excessive oil secretion

Besides acne treatment, vitaminB5 is essential for energy production, fat synthesis, growth and regeneration of various body cells and protein synthesis.

Pantothenic acid is an essential component of the coenzyme abbreviated as (CoA).  This enzyme is composed of the Pantothenic acid, ATP, and cysteine. The CoenzymeA is necessary for biochemical, cellular reactions at the cellular level but most specific for oxidation of fatty acid (breakdown of fats). The body produces ATP and Cysteine through particular processes but pantothenic acid is the only component that is supplied by the foods we eat, and one has to incorporate it into their diet. This truth makes it possible for some people to have a deficiency of Vitamin B5 if they do not consume foods that are rich in it.

With low Coenzyme A level in the body; let’s say Vitamin B5 deficiency, an active metabolism, and fat synthesis are slowed down. These results in excess fats which our body would try to get rid of through other means such as expelling it through the skin oil glands as sebum. Ultimately the increased sebum (oil) in the skin leads to the formation of acne.

Through some studies, pantothenic acid acne treatment has been said to be effective. For instance, in a random blind placebo controlled investigation concerning the effectiveness of using pantothenic acid individuals with mild to moderate acne on the face. The results of this study show that pantothenic acid is safe, well tolerated, and effective in treating acne within twelve weeks of use.

In another study done by Capodice in the year 2012, the assessment of tolerability, feasibility, efficacy, and safety of Vitamin B5 in individuals with moderate facial acne was done. The results indicate that Pantothenic acid can reduce acne lesions and is safe to use.

However, the acne resulting from hormonal imbalance may not be treated with using pantothenic acid. Therefore, it’s wise to find counsel from clinical skin experts before using B5 treatment. One Dr. Li-Hung stated that 10 grams per day are the recommended dosage to treat acne in his study of trying to relate Vitamin B5 with acne. However, his protocol received numerous critiques from various people. Up to date, the required dosage is debatable, but the range is between 5-10grams per day.

First, Dr. Leung’s research regarding pantothenic acid is only a hypothesis. It isn’t yet published as works of research. However, he acquired US patent for using Vitamin B5 for acne treatment. There are only two independent studies that have been done regarding the use of pantothenic acid acne treatment program to cure acne. The studies were done by well-sponsored firms that sell Vitamin B5 products, and this makes the results of these studies more biased.
